Today is Gerard’s 8th birthday. Instead of the traditional birthday layer cake, he has chosen this Wormy Dirt Cake to be the centerpiece at his celebration. It isn’t much to look at, even with the optional garden-themed embellishments. But it tastes great! Tip: With a cake this rich, it’s best to skip the ice cream.
1 to 1 1/4 lb. pkg. Oreo cookies
1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
3 cups milk
1 (12 oz.) tub Cool Whip
2 (3 1/2 oz.) pkg. instant chocolate pudding
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Crush Oreos. Put 1/3 of the crushed Oreos into a clean, unused flower pot. Set aside. Mix butter, cream cheese and sugar and vanilla together. Set aside. Combine milk and pudding mix. Fold Cool Whip into the pudding. Fold together pudding mixture and butter-cream cheese mixture. Spread 1/3 of this mixture onto the crumbled cookies in the pot. Continue layering crumb and pudding mixtures. Add gummy worms at will, reserving a few for garnish.
Be sure to arrange a few gummy worms on top of the cake so that they’re peeking out from the “soil.” A toy garden trowel or a plastic daisy will add to the presentation.
Chill in refrigerator for 3 to 4 hours before serving.
