The following conversation took place yesterday at bedtime:
Mom (to Gerard, 7, and Helen, 11): Your skin is chapped. Put on some of this hand cream.
(The children comply.)
Helen: Mmm, this hand cream reminds me of a dandelion field…
Gerard: MY HANDS SMELL LIKE BROCCOLI!
Helen (dreamily): …or maybe crushed dandelions in a field of clover.
Mom (to Gerard, who has fled the room): Where are you going?
Gerard (over the sound of running water): I’m washing off the terribleness!
