It used to be that, whenever I made a cold cut sandwich for one of the kids, I’d hurriedly squoosh on the mustard or ketchup before plopping a bread slice on top. But then my friend Mary told me about her sandwich-dressing method. She will carefully squeeze out a condiment in the shape of a cross, while saying a prayer for the child who will be enjoying that sandwich at lunchtime. Today, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, I took Mary’s advice when I made sandwiches for my teens to take along on the first day of their homeschool co-op classes. It’s a small act that’s not only good for the kids, but good for a mother’s heart.
